about

"Arctangent hoots by the nudibranch” is a sino-futurist imagination of a fully-automated and playfully different world. The songs were primarily written and arranged with the live-coding language for algorithmic music composition, TidalCycles, to access rhythms and timbres that evolve in complex, unconventional ways. Samples in the album include synthesized robotic sound effects, strange bird calls, binaural fireworks, spoken Mandarin Chinese, and classic Roland drum machines. “Have You Heard” is an acid techno arrangement in an odd time signature inspired by the jazz guitarist Pat Metheny. “Suibian” (“whatever” in Mandarin) predicts widespread apathy as human culture is transformed by automation. “Qeqqata”, with deconstructed MIDI piano phrases, is the first piece written using the MIDI-to-TidalCycles translation tool, which was subsequently open-sourced, allowing musicians to algorithmically remix their recorded piano compositions (github.com/TylerMclaughlin/midi_to_tidalcycles). Melodic opener "Jiang" takes place in a fantasy land where ginger root and fireworks are the main attraction.
